Why Study English Language?
Language is fundamental to a huge range of human activities, whether you're sitting and thinking, interacting with others at a social event, reading a book, working out why an advert is funny - and the rest.Studying English Language will enable you to reflect on what you already 'know' about language ( - more than you'd think), how you use it compared to other people, and language as an element in your wholly individual identity.
Beyond this:
At a critical level, you'll look at the manipulation of language in the newspapers and the media in general; At a historical level, you'll learn about what Old English was and how it's developed into an international language At a directly practical level, you'll learn about how individuals learn and teach; and about speech and communication disorders; And at an overall intellectual level, you'll develop sophisticated skills such as data handling and interpretation, and analysis.
Where does English Language fit with other disciplines?
Over the last fifty years, the ideas and approaches pioneered by Language Study have had a strong impact on most of the disciplines in Humanities, including Psychology, Education, Literature and Philosophy.
For instance, current research in language disorders draws on theories, which were originally put forward to account for communication difficulties in unimpaired adults. In Education, thinking about how children develop language (or languages) has altered the whole way in which we view learning and teaching. In Literature, discourse and conversational analysis are informing current approaches to investigating style in both spoken and written texts. Finally, the analysis of such basic components of thinking as individual words has informed a whole tradition in contemporary philosophy.
As part of you degree at GLOBAL, the study of English Language will help you see the connections between these subjects.
